Reducing Electricity Usage

By conducting an Energy Usage Assessment, the main areas of unnecessary power usage can be uncovered.

From a very basic level that anyone can do, there are power saving devices that can automatically turn off unused appliances left on standby.

Looking at the age and efficiency levels of appliances, such as replacing aging compressors on fridges and air conditioners, re-gassing air conditioners with a lower compression ratio gas and replacing worn out seals on fridges are some of the areas to be looked at.

As part of a solar package, Evosol Commercial will supply high quality LED high bay Lights in exchange for the savings in one year for each Hi Bay replaced (installation cost may be added if a scissor lift is required for installation)

In a comparison of standard High-Bay lights against LED Hi-Bay Lights, the results show conclusively that LED Hi-Bays create huge savings.

As an example, take a business that has ten 400W Hi Bay lights that are about 5 years old.

They are still lighting up the factory but not quite like when new, and the aging transformer is using up a bit more power than when new, so we could say these lights are using up 500W an hour.

For the ten lights, that would be 5kW an hour.

In general, Hi-bays tend to be on all day, unless each hi bay is on its own circuit which is not so likely.

Assuming the high bays that are on for 8 hours which would be a daily total usage of 40kWs of energy at a cost of .25c a unit (average commercial tariff). That works out to $10 a day, $250 a month (excluding Saturday and Sunday) and $3120 a year.

In comparison, a 150W LED Hi Bay will replace a 400W standard Hi Bay.

Using the same formula above for ten 150W LED Hi Bays, we have a total of 8kW a day being used at a cost of $3 a day, 78 a month
and $936 a year.
That’s a saving of $2496 a year.

The total cost 10 LED Hi bays will be paid for by the $2184 savings a year from replacing the ten standard Hi-bays with LED Hi-bays.

In effect, after a year they are FREE

Setting up the System

 

Setting up a solar system with Evosol Commercial is very easy and can be done one of two ways

  1. An Up-front Discounted Price Plan
  2. No Money Out of Pocket Plan

Either way whichever plan you choose, setting up a solar system is the best way to permanently reduce your electricity bills, and if you combine setting up a solar system with setting up an Energy Management plan, you will have extra money that all business’s need to move forward

Up-front Discounted price plan

 

If the business has a fund that is set aside for purchasing company assets, then an up-front payment  plan for the solar system would be advisable as substantial savings can immediately be recognised.

To look at the anticipated short and long-term savings of installing a commercial solar system, we will look at the example of a business that operates its business using 90% of its electricity consumption during daytime hours with a $1000 a month electricity bill.

Understanding that power usage and solar power generation fluctuates throughout the day, we will attempt to offset 75% of the electricity bill

 For a $1000 a month electricity bill, a 30kW system is recommended.

The average cost for a commercial solar system is between $1000 per kW and $1500kW depending on installation requirements and products used.

In this example, we have chosen a standard install cost of $1000 per kW which is a system cost of $30,000 GST included.

The Australian Clean Energy Council recommends working out solar return on 4.4 hours sun a day.

A 30kW system with 4.4 hours of sun a day averaged out over the year will produce 132 kw a day.

132kW x 26.69 (commercial electricity unit tariff cost for first 1650 units per day) is $35.23 a day of power generated.

Aiming for 75% of power usage will reduce $35.23 to $26.42 a day

$26.42 x 30 days (monthly billing cycle) = $792.67 a month. Rounded up to $800 for ease of explanation.

That leaves a $200 power bill to pay with a $800 monthly savings

Factors to take into consideration that will affect the above estimation in a positive way are;

Currently there is a tax incentive whereby an asset purchased up to $20,000 can be written off the business portion in a tax return for the relevant income year.
Assets that cost $20,000 or more can’t be immediately deducted. They will continue to be deducted over time using the general small business pool.
An important note; the $20,000 threshold write off reduces to $1,000 on 1 July 2019. If the system cost is over$20,000 then you can depreciate a pro rata cost of the system every year as your accountant will work out for you.
